Air to air heat pumps in Birmingham
Air to air heat pumps suit many Birmingham homes, especially flats and smaller homes on electric heating. A typical install for a flat or small house is about £4,500, and if you're replacing gas, oil, LPG or electric heating the £2,500 grant comes off that. Tell us about your home and we'll pass your enquiry to up to three F-gas certified installers who cover Birmingham.
Birmingham homes and air to air heat pumps
Birmingham's housing runs from Victorian and Edwardian terraces in areas such as Moseley, Kings Heath and Handsworth, through the large inter-war suburbs of semis, to post-war council flats and tower blocks and a growing number of city-centre apartments around the Jewellery Quarter and Digbeth. Flats and small terraces on electric or gas heating are the best fit for air to air.
What to know locally
- Conservation areas: the city has many, including the Jewellery Quarter, Moseley and Edgbaston. Units facing a highway there need planning permission.
- Terraces: many terraces have only a rear yard or a shared entry. The outdoor unit usually goes on the back wall, sited to meet the 42 dB limit at the neighbour's window.
- City-centre flats: new-build blocks often have strict rules on facades and balconies, so check with the managing agent first.
- Surrounding areas: we also cover Solihull, Sutton Coldfield, West Bromwich, Dudley, Cradley Heath, Halesowen and Wolverhampton.
Grant
The £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant applies in Birmingham as in the rest of England. The system must replace your existing heating, be able to meet your home's heating needs, and be fitted by an installer MCS certified for air to air. It doesn't heat water, so plan for that if you're removing a boiler.
Planning
In England, a unit that provides heating is usually permitted development if it's installed to MCS 020 and meets the size, siting and 42 dB noise limits. Planning decisions here are made by Birmingham City Council. See our planning guide.
