Air to air heat pumps in Newcastle

Air to air heat pumps suit many Newcastle homes, especially flats and smaller homes on electric heating. A typical install for a flat or small house is about £4,500, and if you're replacing gas, oil, LPG or electric heating the £2,500 grant comes off that. Tell us about your home and we'll pass your enquiry to up to three F-gas certified installers who cover Newcastle.

Newcastle homes and air to air heat pumps

Newcastle is known for its Tyneside flats: terraces where each house is two separate flats, one upstairs and one downstairs, each with its own front door. There are also large Victorian terraces in Jesmond and Heaton, suburban semis in Gosforth, and city-centre and Ouseburn apartments. Winters are colder than in southern England, so heating capacity matters more than cooling.

What to know locally

  • Tyneside flats: upstairs and downstairs flats share a building, so think about where both households' outdoor units could go, and agree it with the other owner or the freeholder if there is one.
  • Cold winters: check each unit's heating output at low outdoor temperatures, not just its headline rating.
  • Conservation areas: including Jesmond and Grainger Town in the city centre.
  • Surrounding areas: we also cover Gateshead, North Shields, Tynemouth, Whitley Bay, South Shields, Sunderland and Durham.

Grant

The £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant applies in Newcastle as in the rest of England. The system must replace your existing heating, be able to meet your home's heating needs, and be fitted by an installer MCS certified for air to air. It doesn't heat water, so plan for that if you're removing a boiler.

Planning

In England, a unit that provides heating is usually permitted development if it's installed to MCS 020 and meets the size, siting and 42 dB noise limits. Planning decisions here are made by Newcastle City Council (Gateshead and North Tyneside have their own). See our planning guide.

Questions

Can I fit an air to air heat pump in a Tyneside flat?

Usually. The outdoor unit goes on the outside wall or in the yard, so agree the position with the owner of the other flat, and with the freeholder if the property is leasehold.

Do air to air heat pumps work in the North East?

Yes. They heat well below freezing, but output drops in very cold weather, so sizing from a heat loss calculation is important.
