Air to air heat pumps in Leeds
Air to air heat pumps suit many Leeds homes, especially flats and smaller homes on electric heating. A typical install for a flat or small house is about £4,500, and if you're replacing gas, oil, LPG or electric heating the £2,500 grant comes off that. Tell us about your home and we'll pass your enquiry to up to three F-gas certified installers who cover Leeds.
Leeds homes and air to air heat pumps
Leeds has one of the largest remaining stocks of back-to-back terraces in England, especially in Harehills, Beeston, Holbeck and Burley, as well as through-terraces, stone villas in Headingley and Roundhay, student houses around Hyde Park and city-centre apartments.
What to know locally
- Back-to-back houses: these share their back wall with the house behind, so there's only one outside wall. The outdoor unit usually has to go on the front, which is fine under permitted development unless you're in a conservation area or the unit faces a highway in one. Siting for noise matters because neighbours are close.
- Conservation areas: including Headingley, Roundhay and Chapel Allerton.
- Student and rented homes: landlords replacing electric heating can use the grant if they meet the conditions.
- Surrounding areas: we also cover Bradford, Wakefield, Harrogate, Otley, Wetherby and Castleford.
Grant
The £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant applies in Leeds as in the rest of England. The system must replace your existing heating, be able to meet your home's heating needs, and be fitted by an installer MCS certified for air to air. It doesn't heat water, so plan for that if you're removing a boiler.
Planning
In England, a unit that provides heating is usually permitted development if it's installed to MCS 020 and meets the size, siting and 42 dB noise limits. Planning decisions here are made by Leeds City Council. See our planning guide.
